In accordance with W.S. 35-9-109, the county fire warden or chief of the fire department of a city, town, county or fire district shall investigate the origin & cause and circumstances of each fire occurring  in the city, town, county or fire district that was reported or subject to emergency response, by which property has been damaged or destroyed. Under the same statute, the State Fire Marshal may investigate the origin or circumstances of any fire or explosion or any attempt to cause a fire or explosion.

The DFPES provides fire investigation services to the State on a 24/7, 365 basis and employs a team of five (5) certified investigators under the auspices of the Training Division. The DFPES investigates thirty-five (35) fires and explosions per year, on average, and has access to several statewide resources.

State, National and International Fire Investigation credentialing is an integral part of our team makeup. DFPES Investigators carry a wide range of certifications to include:

· Wyoming State Origin & Cause

· Wyoming State Fire Investigator

· National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI CFI & CFEI)

· International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI FIT , CFI & CFI V)

DFPES Investigators meet quarterly to discuss protocol, program changes and capabilities in order to continue to add value to the services provided. Currency is maintained through on the job scene examinations, arson case participation, courtroom testimony, state training and investigation seminar attendance, etc.
