Fire Training

The Division of Fire Service Training is responsible for assisting local governments in improving the levels of education and training standards for local firefighters and emergency responders.

The Division manages a program of training and certification for over 4,000 firefighters in Wyoming. The program involves developing standards for training, testing and certifying at all levels including; firefighting, fire prevention, public education, fire investigation, fire department management, and specialties including fire apparatus operator, airport firefighter, hazardous materials and rescue. Our students include all emergency first responders.

The Division of Fire Service Training also administers the Wyoming Fire Incident Reporting System for the Wyoming Fire Service.

If you have questions regarding the Assistance to Firefighters Grant obtained from the Wyoming Fire Chiefs Association for volunteer recruitment and retention, please contact Ian Kraft at or call 307-856-6776.

The Department of Fire Prevention & Electrical Safety Training Division is currently working on a ramped up schedule of online training offerings through IFSTA's Resource One platform. The schedule will include more iterations of classes such as Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Fire Instructor I & II, etc.

We will also be putting together online offerings via the same platform for specific subjects such as Hydraulics & Water Supply, Strategies & Tactics, etc. that can be used for value-added training for departments and continuing education hours for recertification purposes.

We are making plans to start offering these courses in the next few weeks and they will continue to be an established part (tool in the toolbox) of our overall statewide training program indefinitely. Every offering will be announced well in advance and through several existing means such as our SFMO website, social media outlets and email lists.

Future plans are also being made to create various webinars relating to Wyoming Specific fire subjects, as well as skills videos filmed and put out by the Wyoming Fire Academy.

In these unprecedented times, the Training Division and Wyoming Fire Academy staff will continue to provide top notch products and services to the State of Wyoming. We understand the challenges that lie ahead and will work to meet them head on. Our trainers and staff are always available for questions, assistance and training/testing delivery. Please don't hesitate to reach out to anyone in the Division, or myself, if you need something.

Stay tuned and safe out there!
