Kyoto

The Wyoming State Fire Marshal’s Office has a new addition to their Fire Investigation Team. In May of 2024, Accelerant Detection Canine (ADC) Kyoto joined the team. Kyoto assists fire investigators across the State of Wyoming by detecting trace amounts of ignitable liquids in and around fire scenes. Kyoto is a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) canine that is assigned to the Wyoming State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Kyoto was born in January of 2022 and originally came from Susquehanna Service Dogs out of Pennsylvania. The program utilizes puppy raisers to train dogs to become service animals. Kyoto was selected by ATF to become an ADC. After his selection, Kyoto went through a rigorous training process at the ATF National Canine Division located in Front Royal, Virgina. This is where Kyoto and his handler, Investigator Eric Siwik, were paired and became a team.

After completing six weeks of intensive daily training and a comprehensive examination process, Kyoto and Investigator Siwik became certified and returned to Wyoming. Investigator Siwik and Kyoto train multiple times a day, every day, using common accelerants often used in setting fires.

When Kyoto isn’t working, he enjoys being a lab and loves to go swimming and a good game of tug of war.

Kyoto can be dispatched to any scene in the State by calling the on-call phone number at 307-349-4993.
